Injuries occur when regular people decide to try it, if for no other reason that they don’t want to pay someone else to do it. That’s because moving heavy items requires proper handling by trained professionals and the right equipment.

That’s right. Moving heavy items safely requires more than manly muscle. It requires planning and strategy, especially if being moved through tricky or narrow spaces.

WHAT IS A HEAVY ITEM?

A heavy item is typically classified as anything weighing 250lbs or more; items that are large, fragile, awkward, expensive, and very difficult to move. Heavy items can range from commercial restaurant appliances and photocopiers to pianos, a gun safe or a wood stove at home. So you can bet that even if injuries are avoided, damage surrounding areas can still happen. Moving awkward, heavy objects down stairways or escalators, around hallways and difficult structures without scratching or gouging anything is quite a feat.

PREPARATIONS WE TAKE

At Marvel Moving our movers are trained and insured so you won’t have to worry about damages to property or surrounding areas. They also bring proper packing material to wrap and protect these items in, as well as tools to transport them safely onto the truck. Here are some of the preparations we take:

  1. Proper Planning - We will of course inspect the facility to decide the best route for removing the item and from there figure out what obstacles there might be in order to address them.
  2. Pre-Measurements - After deciding on the best route we take measurements of doorways and any other passageway to ensure the heavy item will pass through, and what angle we might need to turn it on.
  3. Clearing a Path - Before we attempt the move we clear the route or path we created of any obstacles. This obviously includes anything we can trip on, but it also includes anything that could serve as a distraction to men who need to be fully focused on the job to avoid injury or catastrophe.
  4. Equipment & Tools - Where needed our movers will use back braces and handcarts, as well as other equipment, that will prevent strain as well as damage to the surrounding areas.
  5. Advice - Some heavy items, like pianos, hold special meaning, even spiritual significance, to some people. In these cases people may be eager to help in preparations. With pianos you can wrap the keys and petals with a blanket and tape, for example. If there is anything like this you can do, we will let you know.
